To draw green things well, you need the right shade of green. Here's how to mix different greens using basic colours!
Mix yellow + a tiny bit of blue. Or mix yellow + a small amount of green. This bright, fresh green is great for new leaves, cacti, and frogs.
Mix blue + yellow, then add a touch of black to deepen it. Perfect for pine trees, dark moss, ivy, and rainforest scenes.
Mix green + a lot of white, with a tiny touch of blue. This pale, icy green works well for sea glass, pale frogs, and watery scenes.
Mix green + grey (or green + a little white and a little black). This muted green is great for succulents, eucalyptus, and dried herbs.
Mix yellow + black, or green + brown. This earthy green works well for crocodiles, grasshoppers, and dried vegetation.
Mix blue + yellow in roughly equal amounts. This classic, vivid green is perfect for gemstones, tropical frogs, and grass.
Once you've practised individual green things, try drawing an entire green scene!
Draw layers of jungle โ tall trees at the top, ferns and vines in the middle, mossy rocks at the bottom. Add a frog or chameleon hiding in the leaves!
Draw seaweed, sea lettuce, and kelp floating in the water. Add a sea turtle swimming past, or a seahorse clinging to a piece of green coral.
Draw a sunset scene with silhouetted cacti and succulents. Use lime green and yellow-green for the cacti against an orange and purple sky.
Draw a close-up of the forest floor โ mossy rocks, ferns unfurling, a caterpillar on a leaf, and tiny mushrooms peeking up. Use many different shades of green.
Arrange green fruits and vegetables: an avocado cut in half, a lime, a cucumber, some peas in a pod, and a green apple. Great for practising shading!
Draw a pond surrounded by reeds, lily pads, and frogs. Include tadpoles in the water, a dragonfly, and spring buds on the trees above.
